The Aran Islands lie of west coast of Ireland just off Galway Bay and on the very western edge of Europe. There are 3 islands in total – lying west to east is Inishmore/Inis Mór; Inishmaan/Inis Meáin and lastly the smallest of the three Inisheer/Inis Thiar. There are some 1,200 people living on the islands and the vast majority would use Irish as their main language.

The islands enjoy a relatively moderate temperature and play host to wide variety of flora and fauna with Mediterranean, Arctic and Alpine species all living side by side. The islands are known for their breath-taking coastal views, their 1600 km of stone walls and for having some of the oldest archaeological sites in Ireland namely Dún Chonchúir on Inishmaan and Dún Aengus on Inishmór. The islands have a strong connection with early Irish Christianity dating from the 5Th century when St. Enda brought Christianity to the islands and today you can still see several beehive huts and early monastic buildings.

Dún Aengus is arguably the most famous site of the three islands. Set atop a cliff top, rising some 100 metres out of the sea, this Iron or Bronze Age site has been called one of the best examples of a pre-historic site in Europe. Built in a semi -circle with defensive walls, complete with steps and wall walks it is the largest of such sites on the islands.

The islands are rich in Irish tradition, most notably in the use of the Irish language (they are an official Gaeltacht area), but also in the culture and heritage which they endeavor to maintain. They are extremely self-sufficient, and have adapted to living in their harsh and barren environment, with the main occupations being fishing, farming and of course tourism. The Aran Sweater is indelibly linked to the islanders, with the different stitches symbolizing different strands of life from marriage to religion.

There are many things to see and do on the islands, with one of the most popular being a bicycle ride around Inishmore. While visiting the Islands, you should combine it with a boat trip along the nearby Cliffs of Moher.

To visit the islands, one can take the Doolin2Aran Ferries, the ferry departing fromRossaveal or fly from Connemara Regional Airport.
