Bru na Boinne Visitor Centre, County Meath
Access to the monuments at Newgrange and Knowth are only by guided tour from the Brú na Bóinne Visitors Centre on the south side of the River Boyne, near the village of Donore, Co. Meath. The visitor centre is the starting point for guided tours of the actual Newgrange and Knowth monuments. There are a limited number of guided tours each day, to ensure your place arrive as close to the opening time as possible. On the tour you will take a shuttle bus to Newgrange or Knowth. There is no direct public access to Newgrange or Knowth by road, except for the mornings around the Winter Solstice when there is free access to Newgrange.
Newgrange was constructed over 5,000 years ago (about 3,200 BC), making it older than Stonehenge in England and the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. It was built during the Neolithic or New Stone Age by a farming community that prospered on the rich lands of the Boyne Valley in Co. Meath, Ireland.
Archaeologists classified Newgrange as a passage tomb, however it is now recognized to be much more than a passage tomb. Ancient Temple is a more fitting classification, a place of astrological, spiritual, religious and ceremonial importance.
Newgrange is part of a complex of monuments built along a bend of the River Boyne known collectively as Brú na Bóinne. The other two principal monuments are Knowth (the largest) and Dowth, but throughout the region there are as many as 35 smaller mounds.
Newgrange is open all year round except for December 24th, 25th, 26th, and 27th.
Knowth is open from Easter to 28th October. Last admission to the Visitor Centre is 45 minutes before closing. Average Length of a visit of the Exhibition is 1 hour and the Exhibition and Newgrange visit is two hours and the three hour tour includes the exhibition, Newgrange and Knowth.
