On the coastline of Donegal, in the picturesque village of Killybegs, you’ll find the Maritime and Heritage centre. The experience here is twofold, offering visitors the chance to discover Killybegs rich historic ties with both fishing and carpet making.
Stand in the carpet factory, which once designed, dyed and thread wool by hand-knotters - The very same wool, which produced world class Donegal Carpets that can still be seen in Dublin castle, The Oval Room at the White House, the Vatican, Buckingham Palace, and other stately homes and foreign embassies throughout the globe.
See the world’s largest hand-knotted loom, view a live demonstration of how hand-knotting works and put your own skills to the test at the loom.
View the largest fishing fleet in Ireland in its natural harbour, home to the Atlantic Dawn (one of the largest fishing vessels in the country). Or tackle the “Bridge Simulator” – a replica of a boat wheelhouse – and witness first hand a virtual reality ocean through the eyes (and boots) of a fisherman.
