Christchurch Cathedral, County Waterford
The Cathedral has many architectural and historic features of special interest, including: Magnificent 18th Century Stucco Plasterwork Ceiling and Reredos; and the Macabre Tomb of James Rice (a fine example of a cadaver monument, depicting the horror of death and the glory of saints). It has been described as one of the most important late medieval monuments in Ireland.
Marriage of Strongbow and Aoife
It was in the Cathedral on this site in 1170 AD that Strongbow, the Earl of Pembroke, married the Irish Princess Aoife, daughter of the King of Leinster. This marriage which was to change the course of Irish history forever was the result not of a love match, but of a political and military alliance.
The Elliot Organ
The organ in Waterford's Christchurch Cathedral was built by Thomas Elliot of London, and was installed in 1817 by Alexander Buckingham and was originally positioned in the west gallery. In 1889 the organ was moved to the north-east corner of the nave and this meant that the sound did not carry well and it could not be seen properly.
Stained Glass Window
The only stained glass panel in the Cathedral was made by Alfred Ernest Child in 1930. Titled 'Sorrow and Joy' it is said to be among his best work.
16th Century Warrior's Tomb
The tomb represents a man in full armour lying on his back; the armour is depicted in detail. A side panel, bears the arms of either Power or Butler.
The Fitzgerald Memorial 1770
This huge sarcophagus of Kilkenny marble was designed and executed by John Van Nost, a Dublin Sculptor who also carved the fine monument to Susanna Mason.
The present Georgian Cathedral is built upon the ruins of a Medieval Cathedral built by the Normans in 1210. Some of the foundations of the medieval Cathedral still remain under the floor of the present building. One of these pillars has been exposed for viewing in the ante-chapel of the church.
The cathedral is open to visitors, admission is free, donations gratefully appreciated! Guided tours are available on request.
